Curly hair is delicate and prone to tangling, so using a brush or comb can cause damage and frizz. Instead, use your fingers to detangle and style your curls 🖐️.

BUT… if you must use a tool to detangle, use a curly hair specific brush or comb such as ones with spaced out, pin-like bristles, or wide tooth combs; and never use them on dry curls!

Next, consider the way you're washing your hair. Shampooing at least once a week is great for keeping curls hydrated. The process of shampooing opens up the cuticle allowing for water to flow into the strand - during this stage we should focus on smoothing out the curl and removing matting to help the strand and cuticle get the most out of this hydrating step. You'll be surprised at how easily this is achieved by just running your fingers or palms length-wise, literally smoothing out the hair until the matting resolves. This will also make the next step easier.

While conditioning and detangling, starting from the bottom up in sections with a wide tooth comb or nylon pin bristle brush to remove knots and avoid damaging your curls. Using your fingers can also be a great way to detangle with less chance of breakage but not many of us have the arm strength for that, am I right?! 🪢

And when it comes to drying, rather than rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel, 🙅‍♀️ which can cause frizz and tangles, gently scrunch your hair with a microfiber towel, or cotton t-shirt, to remove excess water. This will help to define your curls and reduce frizz when styling.

When it comes to styling, the key is to work with your curls, not against them. Rather than trying to brush or comb through your hair, use your fingers to gently detangle and shape your curls. When it comes to styling products, less is more. Use a light hold styling cream or gel — foam lotions are also good — and apply it to your curls while they're still wet or damp to lock in moisture. 💧💦

You may need to use more than one styling product at a time to get the desired result; what we call “cocktailing." 🍸

Finally, don't be afraid to embrace the frizz. Curly hair is naturally prone to frizz, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. In fact, a little bit of frizz can give your curls a wild and carefree look.

So, next time wash day rolls around, don't dread it. Embrace it. With the right products and techniques, you can make the process a joyous one 🙌🎊🎉 and enjoy your curly hair.
